How To Make It As An Esports Coach: The 9 Fears Nobody Talks About

Every esports coach has felt them. The quiet fears about falling behind, not making enough money, or burning out. Nobody talks about them, so it feels like you're the only one. You're not. Here are the 9 fears every coach faces and how to handle each one like a pro.

"Am I Falling Behind?"

Esports moves fast. New metas, new strategies, it never stops. So it's easy to feel like you can't keep up. The fix is simple: stay curious. Study the game, watch the pros, and keep leveling up your coaching skills. A coach who keeps learning never gets left behind.

"What If My Players Don't Improve?"

You are a guide, not a guarantee. Stop stressing about winning and focus on improving. Trust the process, because progress takes time. When you coach the improvement, the results follow.

"I'm Not As Experienced As Others"

You might think you need 10 years before players will listen. But experience isn't everything. Your energy, your presence, and your ability to connect are your superpower. I've seen rookie coaches earn insane trust and results just by caring about their players more and out-learning everyone else. Experience is learned. Passion is felt.

"I Don't Have The Right Connections"

Networking isn't about who you know. It's about who knows you. Start with one message. Join communities. Give value first. The right people will notice.

"Will I Ever Make Enough Money?"

Coaching teams isn't the only way to earn. Diversify and specialize: content, courses, 1-on-1 coaching, performance workshops. Or take my approach, become so good people can't ignore you. There are options beyond the "normal" coaching job.

"Will I Ever Go Full-Time?"

If you want it, you can build it. The formula is simple: more skills plus more relationships equals more opportunities. Upskill. Expand your network. The path to full-time is built, not given.

"How Long Will I Coach For Free?"

Not all free roles are equal. Some level you up. Some waste your time. Only take free or underpaid roles if they get you significantly closer to your goal, or let you learn and experiment fast. For me, it took 6 months of doing a lot for free before my first paid work in esports. That money came from the trust I built through relationships. Within 18 months I was earning 3,000+ a month. It all started with giving first.

"Will Others Pass Me By?"

Focus on mastery, not speed. Depth beats width. Don't rush, refine. The best coaches aren't the fastest, they're the most skilled, the ones who moved from doing a lot to doing only the right things.

"What If I Burn Out?"

You can't coach well running on empty. Set boundaries. Rest isn't weakness, it's part of the process. If you need a break, take it. Keep doing the things that recharge you, whether that's reading, seeing friends, or time with people you love. Your energy fuels your coaching.

These Fears Are Real, But They Don't Have To Stop You

Normalize the conversation. Support other coaches. Keep growing. Every coach feels these fears. The ones who make it are just the ones who keep going.
